Portrait of James Doig

About James

Founder of Prima Luce · Composer · Pianist · Vocalist · Musical Director

James Doig is a Sydney vocalist and organist — a professionally trained classical tenor. He holds a Master of Music Performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and has spent more than fifteen years singing and playing for funerals.

He knows the churches of Sydney well — their organs, their acoustics and their customs — and works quietly alongside clergy, funeral directors and celebrants.

Above all he works with families: listening first, guiding gently, and making the music the easiest part of organising the farewell.

His philosophy

"For me, praying for the dead through music is a vocation. It is a privilege to offer my voice in prayer for your loved one and to bring comfort to those who mourn."

— James Doig

He believes music is part of healing — that it can carry a memory, express a love too large for words, and give a family's sorrow a shape they can bear.

Catholic liturgy is where he is most at home, and Italian funerals his particular specialty: from songs made famous by Andrea Bocelli to the ancient chants of the Requiem Mass.

He knows when to sing, when to play, and when to let silence carry the service itself.
